Frequently asked questions
What does UTM stand for?
UTM stands for “Urchin Tracking Module”. These are parameters added to the end of a URL (utm_source, utm_medium…) that your analytics tools, like Google Analytics, read to sort your visits by origin.
Which parameters should I fill in?
At least source, medium and campaign. Term and content are optional: term is for the keywords of a paid ad, content tells apart two links in the same campaign.
Why write everything in lowercase?
In most analytics tools, “LinkedIn” and “linkedin” count as two different sources. The tool lowercases everything, removes accents and replaces spaces with underscores to avoid duplicates.
Can I add UTMs to links on my own site?
No, it's not recommended. A visit that arrives through an internal link with UTMs overwrites the real origin of the visit (the search engine, for example). Keep UTMs for links placed outside your site.
