Opens straight in the app

How to open YouTube links in the app instead of the browser

To open a YouTube link in the app, share it through a Qlynk short link. On iPhone, the YouTube app opens if it is installed; on Android, Qlynk opens the app and falls back to the web page if it is missing. On a computer, the link works like a normal redirect.

Why does a YouTube link open in the browser?

A video you share by email, text message or QR code often opens in the phone’s browser instead of the YouTube app. There, most viewers are not signed in, so subscribing takes several taps, and “Watch later” and their history are out of reach. A channel link is worse: the subscribe button sits on a heavier mobile web page. For a creator sending viewers from a newsletter or a podcast description, every extra step means fewer views. Opening the app directly puts the viewer one tap away from playing your video.

How to do it with Qlynk

  1. Copy the address of your video, Short, playlist or channel from YouTube.
  2. Paste it into Qlynk. With Pro, you can choose the end of the link, such as qlynk.eu/my-channel.
  3. Share the short link anywhere: on a phone, it opens the YouTube app.

On iPhone, Qlynk sends the original YouTube address: iOS opens the app if it’s installed, with no error message. On Android, the link opens the app, or the web page if the app isn’t installed. On a computer, the page opens as usual.

When is it useful?

  • Sending newsletter subscribers straight to your latest video or Short
  • Printing a QR code to your channel on merch, flyers or event banners
  • Linking a sponsor’s product walkthrough from a podcast or blog post
  • Sharing a live stream link by text before you go live

Frequently asked questions

Why are YouTube links not opening in the app on my iPhone?

iOS only hands a link to the YouTube app when it is a regular youtube.com or youtu.be address opened from a place that allows it. Some redirects and some apps keep the page in a browser. A Qlynk link sends the original YouTube address back to the iPhone, so the app opens if it is installed.

Do youtu.be links work?

Yes. youtu.be/VIDEO_ID addresses are recognized, as are youtube.com/watch?v= addresses.

Will a YouTube link in my Instagram bio open the YouTube app?

Instagram opens links in its own built-in browser, which Qlynk does not control. Whether the YouTube app then takes over depends on Instagram and on the phone, so test it on your own device before you rely on it.

Can the link start the video at a specific time?

Qlynk keeps the address you give it exactly as it is, parameters included. How playback starts is then up to the YouTube app.
